What is Dual Enrollment?

Dual enrollment (DE) gives high school students the chance to take college courses that also count toward high school graduation.

Courses may be offered:

  • At your high school (taught by qualified instructors)
  • On a college campus
  • Online through Virtual Virginia

Why Consider Dual Enrollment?

  • Earn college credits early
  • Save money on your college degree
  • Explore college majors and careers before graduation
  • Practice skills you will need for college success
  • Transfer many courses to Virginia public colleges and universities

Who Can Participate?

  • Most DE courses are open to 11th and 12th graders, with some options for 10th graders
  • Students must meet academic readiness requirements, such as GPA, placement tests, or prerequisites
  • Ask your school counselor or adviser about your eligibility and next steps

Transferability of Credits

Most general education DE courses transfer to all Virginia public colleges and universities. Students and families should use TransferVirginia.org to confirm how credits apply to their chosen college or program of study.

Special Programs

College and Career Ready Virginia (CCRV)

All school divisions must give qualified students access to a no-cost DE pathway leading to the Passport (16 credits) or the Uniform Certificate of General Studies (30 credits). These pathways are designed to transfer directly to Virginia’s public colleges.

Early College Scholars Program

Seniors who are on track to earn an Advanced Studies Diploma can apply for this program. Participants earn at least 15 college credits before graduation. Students sign an agreement and must meet GPA requirements.

Virtual Virginia Dual Enrollment

Students statewide can take online dual enrollment courses through Virtual Virginia, offered in partnership with Virginia’s Community Colleges.

Support for All Students

Dual enrollment is open to all students who meet the requirements, including:

  • Students with disabilities – Accommodations may be available through both the high school and the college. Students and families should discuss supports with the school counselor and the college’s disability services office.
  • English learners (ELLs) – Language supports may be available. Students should ask about tutoring, translation, or course options that support their language needs.
  • First-generation college students – Advisers and counselors can provide extra help navigating applications, course choices, and financial questions.

Every student should have the opportunity to access dual enrollment if they are ready for the challenge.
