Early childhood screeners and assessments support school readiness by providing families, teachers, and school leaders a detailed understanding of students’ learning, development, and skills at multiple time points throughout the year.

VKRP uses engaging game-like tasks to assess students’ skills in the areas of mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills using the Early Mathematics Assessment System (EMAS) and Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS). Teachers and school leaders benefit from detailed information reports at the school, classroom, and student levels that can be used to customize instruction. Families are engaged in the learning process through detailed Family Information Reports and can partner with schools to support learning outside the classroom.

Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS)

VALLSS serves as the literacy component for Virginia’s measure of school readiness. The VALLS: Pre-K is a tool used to screen children’s early language and literacy skills that are most likely to predict future reading skills. Screening children early on reduces the risk for developing reading difficulties later in school.

In Virginia, all kindergarten students are screened using the VKRP and VALLSS in both the fall and the spring in public schools. In addition, three and four-year-old pre-K students may be screened, depending on the preschool program they attend. VKRP and VALLSS offer an optional mid-year assessment for interested participating programs.
