Review of the 2020 Health Education & Family Life Education Standards of Learning

The Code of Virginia § 22.1-253.13:1:B requires the Board of Education to review and revise the Standards of Learning (SOL) at least once every seven years to ensure that Virginia’s standards remain rigorous, current, and relevant by aligning to research and incorporating content to prepare students for entry into career, college, and military pathways. The Department has begun the process of reviewing the 2020 Health Education Standards of Learning and the 2020 Family Life Education Standards of Learning and is seeking input to ensure these standards reflect current best practices, research, and the evolving needs of Virginia's students.

Please use these forms to provide your feedback. Each survey takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.

Survey feedback is due by January 20, 2026.

The Department will also host a series of preliminary public listening sessions online to gather ideas, experiences, and recommendations from communities across the state. Whether you are an educator, student, parent,  community member, or health organization representative, your voice matters in shaping expectations that guide health and family life learning in Virginia. Register by clicking on a link for a listening session:

Title IX and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Modules for Grades 9 and 10 Now Available

July 1, 2025: The Virginia Department of Education has released new student training modules on Title IX and sexual harassment for students in grades 9 and 10. In accordance with the Code of Virginia § 22.1-23.5, each school board may adopt policies requiring students in these grades to complete the training. Each school board shall also: 1) allow all such students to opt-out of participating in the completion the training modules by request of the student's parents if such student is under the age of 18, or by request of the student if such student is 18 years of age or older; and 2) ensure that all such students are provided information about school counseling services and the supportive measures and formal complaint procedures available to them, as required under Title IX (20 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq.), in the school they attend as part of the training modules developed pursuant to subsection B of § 22.1-23.5

The modules are designed to help students understand what constitutes sexual harassment, how to recognize prohibited conduct, and how to report concerns. The modules also explain students’ rights and schools’ responsibilities under Title IX. Students will explore the importance of consent, learn strategies to prevent sexual harassment, and understand how to report incidents effectively.

This resource is available through Virtual Virginia and may be integrated into local school division instruction.

Self-enroll through Virtual Virginia: Title IX and Sexual Harassment Prevention Instructional Resources. These modules are available for download through Canvas Commons.
