Standards of Learning
Adopted October 2020
The Digital Learning Integration Standards of Learning were approved by the Virginia Board of Education in October 2020. These standards emphasize the essential role of technologies in the deeper learning experiences of students in content areas as digital citizens in an ever-increasing digital world.
The Digital Learning Integration Standards of Learning define seven “student roles” adapted from the ISTE Standards for Students as Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator and Global Collaborator. These strands help weave technology into every content area to deepen learning. Each role mirrors a domain of the Profile of a Virginia Graduate.
Standards of Quality
Virginia law embeds these standards into statewide practice.
Under § 22.1-253.13:6, the Board of Education must maintain a long-range educational technology plan that integrates the DLI SOL into Virginia’s Standards of Learning and curricula.
Likewise, § 22.1-70.2 requires every division to adopt Internet-use and safety policies, reinforcing the principles of responsible digital citizenship central to both the DLI SOL and the Profile of a Virginia Graduate. It should be noted that five out of the seven Digital Learning Integration Standards of Learning are included within the Profile of a Virginia Graduate.
