NEW! English Language Arts Walkthrough Tools

 As announced in the Virginia Education Update (Article 2025-37-563), the Office of English is providing school divisions and literacy leaders with the K–12 Comprehension Walkthrough Tool as well as the K–3 Foundational Skills Walkthrough Tool. These resources may be used or adapted by divisions to meet local needs and to support high-quality literacy instruction across the Commonwealth. To support implementation, the Office of English is offering virtual training sessions for school divisions and literacy leaders on both tools. 

NEW! Considerations for Planning Reading Intervention in Grades 4-8

The Virginia Department of Education's Office of English is providing school divisions and literacy leaders with support for scheduling, planning, and implementing intervention services for students in grades 4–8 through the Considerations for Planning Reading Intervention document. This resource offers key considerations in the following areas: School Personnel, Programs and Implementation, Scheduling Intervention, Instructional Approaches to Support Intervention, and Strategies to Ensure Interventions are Data-driven.

Developing Skilled Readers & Building Reading Stamina Webinars

 In March 2025, the Office of English hosted grade-specific, live webinars that explored how the DSR standards are met through content-rich texts read by students. These webinars provided expectations for the grade-band for students to fluently read complex texts, purposefully gather textual evidence from a variety of texts and genres to support claims, conclusions and inferences, and understand how intentionally selected texts provide opportunities for students to read widely about a topic to gain knowledge and expand their vocabulary. The video webinar recordings and scripted slides, found in the table below, walk participants through how to anchor all literacy learning in the DSR strand.

Grade Level Instructional Guides and Recorded Grade Level Webinars

The K-12 English Instructional Guides provide English and literacy educators support with the implementation of the 2024 English Standards of Learning. Instructional Guides are currently available on the 2024 English Standards of Learning webpage. The video webinar recordings and scripted slides, found in the table below, walk participants through how to read and use the instructional guides. 

Understanding the Standards

 The Understanding the Standards document offers targeted instructional guidance on grade level content and instructional practices. Details within each grade level document provide in-depth explanations regarding the expectations for what should be included during instruction.  Grade level Understanding the Standards documents are currently available on the 2024 English Standards of Learning webpage.

Grade Level Side-by-Sides

The Grade Level Side-By-Side charts show the vertical progression of the standards across grade levels and can be utilized to support planning for appropriate scaffolds to meet grade level expectations and extension opportunities for students. The Bridging Grade Level Side-By-Side charts show vertical progression of the standards at the transition grade levels and can be utilized to support instructional planning for the bridging grades that transition to the next grade band level.  Grade level Side-By-Side and Bridging Side-By-Side resources are currently available on the 2024 English Standards of Learning webpage.

English Standards Crosswalk

The Crosswalk Document supports educators with understanding the new structure and rigor of the 2024 English Standards of Learning and provides an overview of the revisions to the 2017 English Standards of Learning. Components of the resource include a summary of the content in each content strand, a comparison chart between the 2017 English SOL and the 2024 English SOL, and summary charts documenting the changes in each grade level.

Overview of Revisions

The Overviews of Revisions provide grade-level specific overviews of the changes in both the structure and content of the 2024 English Standards of Learning and explain the increase in rigor and academic expectations from the 2017 English Standards of Learning.  Grade level Overview of Revisions are currently available on the 2024 English Standards of Learning webpage.

Narrated Overview of Revisions Presentations

These PowerPoint presentations highlight significant changes and revisions in the 2024 English Standards of Learning.  These resources are available for Grades K - 12, and are available in PowerPoint and PDF formats. All grade-level recordings, PowerPoints. and PDF documents are currently located on the 2024 English Standards of Learning webpage.

English and NAEP Framework Analysis

The Virginia Department of Education conducted an external review of the 2024 English Standards of Learning (SOL) in comparison to the Reading Framework for the 2026 National Assessment of Educational Progress (nagb.gov). The crosswalk and analysis found overall strong alignment between Virginia’s 2024 English SOL and the NAEP Reading Framework.
