Overview
Dual language programs are growing across Virginia and nationwide, reflecting increasing interest from families and schools. As more divisions implement these programs, there is a rising demand for qualified, licensed educators who are trained to teach in bilingual settings. The Dual Language Endorsement helps ensure consistency, quality, and support for these educators and programs.
The Dual Language Endorsement is an official add-on to a Virginia teaching license for educators who teach academic subjects in both English and a partner language in a dual language or immersion program. It ensures that teachers have the knowledge and skills to support multilingual learners in developing both content knowledge and biliteracy.
This endorsement is designed for licensed teachers who work in dual language settings, where instruction is delivered in two languages—English and a partner language such as Spanish, French, Mandarin, or others. These teachers typically teach core content areas (e.g., math, science, social studies, or language arts) using both languages as the medium of instruction.
